Just hours before rosters froze on Thursday, the Bloomington Edge made several personnel moves to strengthen their team. Going into the final week of the regular season and through the CIF playoffs, Bloomington’s revamped roster will include wide receiver Brandynn Clark (5’11, 175), defensive back Marquis Drayton (6’1, 205), defensive back Fred Griggs (5’11, 190), offensive lineman Brandon Haskin (6’4, 310), defensive linemen Rakeem Knight (6’2, 311), defensive back Jason Simpson (6’1, 210), offensive linemen Travis Turner (6’7, 324), and quarterback Jawad Yatim (6’1, 200).
Although the Edge defense was already ranked second best in the CIF, head coach Ameer Ismail looked to make the unit even stronger with the additions of Jason Simpson, Fredd Griggs, Marquis Drayton, and Rakeem Knight.
Simpson joins the Edge after playing six seasons with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League (AFL). He had 4 interceptions in 2013, and was First Team All-Arena in 2012 when he had 10 interceptions. Simpson played collegiately at the University of Missouri where he was 2nd team All Big Twelve.
Fred Griggs was 1st team All State as a high school athlete in Tallahassee Florida. He played collegiately at William Penn University, and comes to Bloomington from Cedar Rapids of the Indoor Football League (IFL). Griggs was one of the top tacklers in the IFL in 2016.
Drayton finished his college career at Bethune-Cookman in 2016. He was on several NFL team’s radar his senior year, largely due to his 4.41 forty time, but ended up not being drafted. Drayton attended rookie mini-camps with the Oakland Raiders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Rakeem Knight also joins the Edge after playing collegiately at Bethune Cookman. Knight played in 11 games his senior year with two sacks. After participating in a mini-camp with the New York Giants, Knight spent his rookie indoor football season with the Jacksonville Sharks of the National Arena League (NAL).
On the offensive side of the ball, the Edge added Trevis Turner, Brandon Haskin, Jawad Yatim, and Brandynn Clark.
Turner played for the DeSoto Eagles in Texas which is one of the top high school football programs in the country. He played his college ball at Abilene Christian University, and was selected as the Best Offensive Linemen of the Senior Bowl his senior year. After college, Turner spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers before signing with the Nebraska Danger of the IFL.
Haskin played collegiately at Tennessee State. He re-joins Coach Ismail after the two were both members of the Spokane Empire in 2016.
Also re-joining coach Ismail is quarterback Jawad Yatim. Yatim played with Coach Ismail this past off-season in the newly formed Dalian Dragon Kings of AFL-China where he was the 4th leading rusher for that team. Yatim has also played for the IFL’s Cedar Rapid Titans and played collegiately at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts.
Finally, Brandynn Clark joins the Bloomington Edge coming to the CIF from the AFL. Clark played collegiately at Missouri Western State University where he was 2nd team All-MIAA as a return specialist in 2015. He led the MIAA with a 14.3 yard punt return average.
The Bloomington Edge plays on the road against the Bismarck Bucks on Saturday night at 7 pm, and will play a first round playoff game on June 10th against an opponent yet to be determined. The Edge completed their home schedule for 2017, but 2018 season tickets are on sale now. Please call 484-840-3343 for more information or visit www.bloomingtonedge.net.
